  The Science Store was founded in 2007 by Tom Mickel, Ph.D., kindly known to his students as “Dr. Tom”. Educated at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Dr. Tom is what you might consider over-educated in the field of science. His degrees include a Ph.D. In Biology (with research done in the field of marine animal physiology), a Masters of Science in Scientific Instrument Design, a Masters of Arts in Biology, and a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology. He has published numerous research papers in scientific journals, including Deep Sea Research, Biological Bulletin, and Physiological Zoology.

   Trained as a scientist, Dr. Tom has participated in many research expeditions. He has done research in deep sea submersibles to depths greater than 5000 feet. He was a member of the first Biological Expedition that studied Hydrothermal Vents, along with Dr. Bob Ballard (discoverer of the Titanic), in 1979.

   An avid inventor, Dr. Tom has designed electronic instruments for both Biotech and Telecommunication companies. He co-designed a surgical drill used in neurosurgery, ENT surgery and spinal surgery. Co-founder of Mednext Inc., a medical device manufacturing company owned by Medtronic Inc. he holds 7 patents in surgical drill design and use.

   At The Science Store we firmly believe that no child is too young, nor any adult too old, to delve into the world of science, whether it be biology, chemistry, physics, electronics or robotics. We also believe that science should be a hands-on experience; it cannot be learned solely out of a book. Science is about observing and discovering the world around you, and in order to do that you have to “dig in and get dirty”.
